Surf Park Sustainability: Minimizing Impact Beyond Wave Power

Surfing is rooted in nature and the feeling of being immersed in the elements is irreplaceable by surf parks. It is from these interactions with nature, from the rugged coastline of British Columbia to the sandy shores of Southern California, where our team finds a deep connection to surfing that drives our everyday work. That said, our environmental ethos remains at the core of what we do at Endless Surf. To us, minimizing the impact of our technology is a commitment beyond just ourselves, to our clients’ success and our entire industry’s future.

We understand that sustainability reaches into a mix of how we design the lagoon, how we produce waves, and how we enable the operator to run the venue. That is why we’re focused on driving down resource consumption in as many areas as possible. From our ‘‘less is more‘‘ mentality to operating flexibilities and key partnerships, we confidently stand by our belief that we are at the forefront of developing sustainable solutions that lead our industry.

Size Matters… And Less is More

Environmental impact goes well beyond power consumption, and we’ve lessened our impact by reducing our pool’s footprint while still maintaining what will be one of the longest ride times in the industry.

CAPEX: With a compact and scalable footprint, Endless Surf consistently builds for 1/3 less than leading competitors. This savings translates to less excavation, less concrete, less water, etc., ultimately lessening our direct impact on the environment during construction.

OPEX: Many of these savings transfer to operations as well. Things like less water translates to less filtration energy requirements, and even fewer chemicals to sanitize. With Endless Surf, you also do not need to drain the pool for yearly maintenance. With pneumatic systems being uniquely light on maintenance and having all our equipment conveniently located above water, venues will be able to conserve a huge amount of water every single year.

Endless Surf technology benefits that help surf park sustainability

Operational Flexibility Eliminating Energy Waste

Flexible operating modes are built into our robust technology, a first of its kind in the world of surf pools. As a new industry, surf parks have lacked capabilities to cater to varying capacities without wasting energy. In our design, Endless Surf gives more control surrounding energy consumption that allows venues to only use only what they need and when they need it. With ES, you do not have to waste unnecessary energy on unnecessary waves.

  • Flexible operating modes: to scale back energy consumption during off-peak times.
    • Half Power: Use half of the pool for lower capacity sessions
    • Split Peak: Customize waves of lesser energy on either side according to skill levels
  • Recycling of energy: from The Peak to create waves on The Inside and The Shore
    • Multiple skill levels can benefit from the energy of one wave
  • Wave Interval Management
    • Operators can produce waves at any interval without being locked in to 8s, ultimately saving on peak power consumption.
    • Ideally, pumping out waves every 12 seconds reduces power consumption by 20%

Key Partnerships

Further proving our commitment to sustainable solutions for our clients is evident in our recent partnership announcement with Myrtha Pools. As an alternative solution to the pitfalls of concrete construction, we have teamed up with Myrtha to offer a more durable, long-lasting and sustainable offering using Stainless Steel with laminated PVC.

  • A 50% reduction in carbon footprint as compared to concrete
  • BREEAM and LEED points compatible
  • Pre-fabricated construction with almost zero waste
  • Recyclable panels
  • Longer lifespan with a 25-year warranty

Commitments Beyond Our Product

This past year, we are proud to have been accepted as a member of STOKE, the world’s first certification body promoting a sustainable future for surf park operations. In addition to meeting the certification standards, we are actively working together with our projects across the globe to ensure that their developments using ES technology are STOKE certified as well.

Additionally, in conjunction with our parent company, WhiteWater, we have strong commitments to be carbon neutral by 2040. In addition to reducing the carbon footprint tied to our offices, manufacturing, and overall products, we’re also donating 1% of corporate profits to water focused charities to benefit those on the ground making a difference for our water ecosystem. We recently announced our corporate-wide support of Swim Drink Fish, a nonprofit working toward a swimmable, drinkable, and fishable future.

All-in-all, we are very excited to bring these aforementioned tech developments to life within our first projects underway around the world, showcasing what we believe will be game-changing innovations for the future of surf parks. At Endless Surf, we certainly hold ourselves to a high standard when it comes to our product, as we are committed to delivering a technology that exceeds expectations when it comes to the surf experience, ROI for our clients, and a minimized impact on the environment.
